Tachyoninc camera : 2011 Tachyon XC Micro Helmet Camera
I bought this video camera to use for recording some mountain bike trails here in Colorado, but I decided to give it a test ride this week on my high powered rc car. I used the velcro dual lock strip they furnish to attach it to the car, and I was pleased how well it fit on there. The camera also comes with two other mounts for top or side helmet mounting.
Anyways, I bounced this thing nearby the backyard for a while with no issues whatsoever, obviously a puny jostling doesn't consequent this, the photo ability is decent, surely not hd, but very passable watching it full screen on my computer. The real test came doing some speed runs, I had a mid drive collision with a buddies car at about 40mph, the camera came flying off and went flipping end over end about 40 feet down asphalt. Picked it up fearing the worst, but after I reset the batteries it came to life immediately...that's crazy, I don't know that I've owned any other electronics that could have survived that.
It's not excellent though, I'll run down the features that stood out to me, pros and cons.
Pros:
Rugged - you could probably throw this out of your car on the highway and it'd survive, well built no doubt
Waterproof - haven't put that to the test but it genuinely looks like it, I think it's submersible to 30ft or so.
Plug and pull video, i.e. Plug it into your computer with provided usb2 cord (non rights connection!), and it opens a folder with your avi's sitting right there, very very simple, no software.
Convenient size (fyi tachyon makes a smaller version of this cam too)
Complete instructions online, some citizen might think this is a con but I like it.
Cons:
Mic is inside the waterproof seal for clear reasons, you can run the camera with the seal open, but obviously it loses the ability to go underwater, pretty much meaning the sound is muffled with it closed.
Both times I had a horrendous crash, the camera shut off, maybe it's a failsafe, but I lost the current video, bummer, would have been fun to watch.
The remote operate is kind of finicky, by that I mean I couldn't get it to work, maybe it's user error but it's just one button and I tried a quick click or retention it down, nada, so I can't be certain.
I'd look at the manual online to see if that's suitable (I've never owned a camcorder), but battery life seems kind of low.
Other thoughts: This camera has a 1 hour time limit on files, so what it will do is cut off after an hour then automatically start up a new file, while it's nice that it will keep recording for extended lengths, there's a opportunity you might miss a few seconds of performance in a continuous video.
